Addressing the Needs of Multicultural Families for Welfare Family Counseling Services

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study was aimed at identifying the welfare needs of multicultural families with regard to family counseling and analyzing the family counseling currently available to multicultural families as a welfare service. The researchers also proposed integrated improvement of welfare services, based on families¡¯ needs.
Methods: Data in the study were collected using TheNational Survey for Multicultural Families in Korea.
Results: The family counseling needs of multicultural families were compared with the current state of available family counseling welfare services. The researchers found that the current state of welfare counseling services does not meet families¡¯needs and is problematic in various aspects. The researchers offered suggestions for improvement.
Conclusions: The results suggest that there is a need for greater interest and effort in the policy and practice of effectively providing family counseling as a welfare service to multicultural families. Theresearchers conclude that family counseling should be established as a central welfare service for multicultural families.
